Arsenal may have taken a big hit in their transfer plans with an injury to key-target William Carvalho. Do the Gunners have a backup plan?
Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho may have not be joining Arsenal after all due an injury that will sideline him for several months.
According to the Express, Carvalho has been ruled out of action for approximately three months with what was quoted as a “stress fracture” of his tibia – the injury is expected to take 10-12 weeks to heal. The 23-year-old Portugal international has been heavily pursued by the Gunners after a sensational season in Primeira Liga that included a Taca de Portugal win.
The release clause on Carvalho’s contract is estimated at £25 million.
The 2013-14 Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year, Carvalho has made 30 appearances for Sporting Lisbon and scored 5 goals.
Carvalho was a member of Portugal’s Under-21 European Championship run, but missed on a critical sudden-death penalty kick that gave the victory to Sweden. He was named the Player of the Tournament for his efforts.
