A hamstring injury might cost Chelsea their leading scorer in the Community Shield game. Will Diego Costa play?
Before Chelsea begin their Premier League title defense, they face Arsenal in the Community Shield match – but a pair of injuries to key starts may make victory a hard proposition.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea leading scorer Diego Costa along with veteran center back Gary Cahill are both considered doubtful for the weekend match against their London rivals. Cahill exited Chelsea’s pre-season match against Barcelona early with an apparently broken nose. Costa was removed after an hour’s worth of play over concerns about a lingering hamstring injury.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was only cautiously optimistic about his two stars’ abilities to play against Arsenal on Suday at Wembley Stadium.
“Cahill has a chance of a broken nose, maybe yes, maybe no. If no, perfect. If yes, he will get a mask tomorrow to be ready for Sunday,” Mourinho told the Blues official website. “Diego felt a little thing in his hamstring. We believe it is just a feeling, no more than that, but we have to wait.”
A former star with Atletico Madrid, Costa had an incredible debut for Chelsea in the 2014-15 season, leading the club with 20 goals as they won the Premier League. He finished behind only Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane on the Premier League scoring list.
The 29-year-old Cahill is entering his 5th season at Stamford Bridge and won PFA Team of the Season honors for his second year in a row.
