Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to see his squad defend their Premier League title this season.
But Mourinho is keeping his eyes peeled for competition and thinks that Arsenal could be a major threat to dethrone the Blues after finally spending big.
“Every club is different, we don’t need to speak about them but if you add up the amounts clubs have spent in the last three or four years I think maybe you will find a surprise,” he told the London Evening Standard.
“If you put Mesut Ozil plus Alexis Sanchez, plus Calum Chambers, plus Mathieu Debuchy (total cost £100.5m) you will maybe find a surprise,” Mourinho said. “They have just bought a fantastic goalkeeper (Petr Cech from Chelsea for £10m) and that is a position which is very important in a team.
“It’s a fantastic squad with good players, a fantastic goalkeeper, they are more than ready to be a title contenders.”
Mourinho has never been short of cash to splash himself during trophy-laden spells at Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
This obvious example of mind games continues the hostile relationship between Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, who were involved in a shoving match during a 2014 Premier League clash.
The Portuguese also refused to congratulate Wenger on Arsenal’s most recent FA Cup win.
The Gunners finished third in the 2014-15 Premier League standings, 12 points behind their London rivals, and have not secured a title since 2004.
Arsenal have not been particularly active in the transfer window, but they have made the key addition of Cech, who shocked the football world by transferring to Arsenal after 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge.
