Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, the 59-year-old said the team’s latest performance was the worst he’d seen for 40 years, and described the contest as ’embarrassing’.
“In nearly 40 years of playing for and watching England in one day cricket I have not seen a worse performance than the one I saw in Wellington on Friday,” he said.
“There have been other terrible performances of course, such as the Australia day defeat in 2007 which also finished before the lights came on, and the shellacking they took against the Aussies in 2003.
“But this was just embarrassing. It wasn’t even a contest.
“The bare numbers tell you how bad it was with 226 balls left to play by the time New Zealand won, and it would have been more if they didn’t break for tea.
They were bowled out by a decent swing bowler, the sort of which England batsmen grow up facing and yet they didn’t know how to deal with it.”
