Chelsea centre back David Luiz retains his funny side whilst developing into one of the best defenders in the world.
Chelsea defender David Luiz often plays the role of court jester, which occasionally masks that he is a quite brilliant defender.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville once described the 26 year-old as running around “like he’s being controlled by a 10-year-old on a Playstation,” but Luiz’s improvement has been close to immeasurable in the last year, and the Brazilian has only recently won appreciation in his home country.
A crucial goal line clearance in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup final against Spain proved vital in Brazil lifting the trophy, and Luiz has gone on to not only become a clear first choice in the back line, but also regularly captains his country in the absence of Thiago Silva.
Still, the clown side of David Luiz has not entirely disappeared – as can be seen from this photo alongside Palmeiras defender Henrique and VfL Wolfsburg holding midfielder Luiz Gustavo.
