The 35-year-old’s appointment comes 500 days before the tournament begins in Australia.
Socceroos skipper Lucas Neil says he is “honoured” to be appointed as Captain Ambassador for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia.
Neill’s selection comes 500 days before the tournament’s start date on January 9 in Melbourne, which will see 16 countries compete over a three-week period for the trophy currently held by Japan following their triumph in 2011.
The 35-year-old, who recently signed for Omiya Ardija in the J-League, subsequently told the Herald Sun that he has “long dreamed of a football event this big coming to Australian shores,” and that the role is “like wearing the captain’s armband, but never having to take it off.”
Honoured to be @afcasiancup Captain Ambassador. Countdown is on – 500 days to go!! See you in Australia 2015 http://t.co/WaDwQ7l5Qu #AC2015
