Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann also confirmed to MLSsoccer.com at the Sarajevo airport on Sunday that goalkeeper Tim Howard, a veteran of 90 USMNT caps, will replace Dempsey and don the armband in the friendly at Asim Ferhatovic Hasse Stadium.
Howard spoke to the press on Monday and stressed that despite the game’s billing as a friendly, the USA considered the event to be “vitally important”.
“We’re focused because not only did we just finish the Gold Cup, but as I mentioned (we have) World Cup qualification in two weeks,” said Howard, who flew into Sarajevo from Manchester with fellow EPL goalkeeper, Bosnian starter Asmir Begovic of Stoke City. “This game is vitally important. It’s not a game where we can just come here and not show up and take it easy. We have to play really hard.”
“We’re expecting a hard game, it’s going to be difficult.”
