Suspended Dallas Cowboys DE Greg Hardy made a controversial Tweet on Friday night by Tweeting an inappropriate joke that referenced the September 11 tragedies.
On Friday night, the Carolina Panthers drafted 6’5″ WR Devin Funchess out of Michigan to pair up with another 6’5″ receiver, Kelvin Benjamin. One fan went on Twitter and called the two receivers “The Twin Towers” – a reference to the the iconic New York City skyscrapers.
But Greg Hardy replied to the fan’s Tweet with the reply “didn’t the twin towers get blowN up lol” – a rather tasteless reference to when the two towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001 in a terrorist attack that left thousands dead.
According to Yahoo! Sports, Hardy later removed the Tweet and apologized, saying: Ill say this I apologize 4a comment that mentioned an event where no reference 2humor is ever ok but I hope my real fans know I would never.”
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones responded later that the team was aware of the comments that Hardy made and said he hopes players in general don’t write thinks that are in bad taste.
“We will address that and we’ll just leave it at that,” Jones said. “We all know that we’re living in a time now that you don’t allude or use examples that socially… are just out of step or bad taste. Those are some of the kinds of things it’s good to be able to have a good line of communication with players and address and work on.”
Hardy has been no stranger to controversy recently, earning a 10-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy stemming from a domestic violence incident he was indicted but later acquitted on. Hardy signed with the Cowboys after the Carolina Panthers – his former team – chose not to re-sign him. Last week Hardy reportedly got into a fight with a teammate who allegedly called him out on his past behavior.
