Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal – May 1989
Quite possibly the greatest fixture of the lot.
The two sides were the leading two in the division and the match was essentially a title decided with Liverpool hunting their 18th league title and second in two season.
The match was delayed until after the FA Cup final following the Hillsborough tragedy and was reschedule resulting in it being the last match of the season.
The situation was clear, if Arsenal won by two goals or more they would be League Champions.
The score was 0-0 at half time but Arsenal took the lead on the 52 minute after an in-direct Nigel Winterburn free kick was headed home by Alan Smith, Liverpool complained he didn’t touch the ball and that there was a foul in the box but the goal was given.
It looked like it was too late for the Gunners after the clock went past 90 minutes but with just one minute to go Arsenal launched their final attack resulting in a teenage Michael Thomas racing into the penalty area and shooting over Bruce Grobbelaar to secure a 2-0 win.
The Arsenal fans were in raptures.
