The San Francisco 49ers have placed 7-time Pro Bowl LB Patrick Willis on injured reserve, ending his 2014 season.
Willis suffered a toe injury in October and has been out of football for the last three games. He had 34 tackles and an interception this season for the 49ers.
The 49ers have not suffered much because of it though, with backup LB Chris Borland matching his production in just two games with 18 tackles against the Rams and 17 tackles against the Saints in the past two weeks.
The timing is good enough for the 49ers, with LB Aldon Smith reinstated by the league and LB NaVorro Bowman almost fully recovered from an ACL/MCL tear suffered in the NFC Championship game. Both players could start as soon as next week.
