Arizona Cardinals DB Tyrann Mathieu will be receiving a stabilizing pin on his injured thumb, possibly requiring him to miss time at a crucial junction in the Cardinals season.
Ed Werder of ESPN reported that Mathieu fractured and dislocated his thumb and that he will need to have a pin surgically inserted into it in order to heal properly. Werder indicated Mathieu is likely to miss several games while waiting to get the green light to return to action. Team doctors were initially unable to determine whether Mathieu would be able to play with a cast protecting the injury or if he’d be forced to miss time.
Mathieu missed the season opener as he finished up rehab from last year’s torn ACL and has 29 tackles and an interception for the season.
In his rookie season last year, Mathieu finished 3rd in the voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, losing out to Jets DT Sheldon Richardson and Bills LB Kiko Alonso.
