New York Giants DE Robert Ayers will miss the final four games of the 2014 NFL season after he suffered a torn pectoral muscle against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Ayers, who the Giants signed for a two-year, $4 million contract this past offseason, had 5.0 sacks this year, which tied him with Jason Pierre-Paul for the team lead.
A first round pick by the Broncos in 2009, Ayers struggled in his role as a pass rusher, totaling just 6.5 sacks in his first four seasons despite playing in 57 games. His breakout year came in 2013 when he nearly doubled his career total with 5.5 sacks in spot duty for the AFC Champion Broncos. He entered the free agency period with limited offers though.
With a defense that is currently ranked 29th overall in yards allowed, the Giants will sorely miss one of their only pass rushers.
