The San Diego Chargers will be without one of their key special teams starters for the foreseeable future after P Mike Scifres suffered a broken clavicle against the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Scifres is having surgery to repair his clavicle on Monday. Rapoport reporte that Scifres should be okay in time to play in the postseason, although the Chargers will likely have to scramble to find his replacement for the time being.
In addition to punting, Scifres also handles holding duties for PK Nick Novak’s field goals and extra points so the Chargers will likely have to find a replacement holder as well.
Safety Eric Weddle would have been the backup holder against the Patriots, but San Diego didn’t make any kick attempts after Scifres was injured, so it didn’t matter.
Mike Scifres ranks No. 10 on the all-time yards/punt list with 45.2 yards/punt. He has never made the Pro Bowl but has been in the top 10 of punting yards in seven of his 12 seasons.
