The Chargers stayed alive in the playoff race with a comeback win over the 49ers last night, but it might all be for naught if QB Philip Rivers misses the final game of the season.

Last week there were rumors that San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers was having lingering back troubles – Rivers had missed some practice time and a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN that Rivers had a more severe back injury than the team had let on. Some of those fears, unfortunately, have been realized.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Rivers’s injury is a bulging disk in his lower back and that the Chargers star QB may need to have surgery to repair the condition.
Luckily for San Diego fans, any surgery won’t come until after the season and Rivers’s performance on Sunday is the latest sign that he isn’t likely to come out of the lineup before the Chargers run out of chances to play games.
Rivers led the Chargers back from a 21-0 deficit to the San Francisco 49ers to tie the game up at 35-35 and go to overtime, winning on a Nick Novak field goal to stay alive in the NFL playoff race.
