Portuguese defender could be set for return to Serie A.
Inter coach Walter Mazzarri is set to be reunited with Porto defender Rolando according to speculation in the Italian media on Thursday.
While the Italian giants continue their pursuit of Chelsea youngster Wallace, it is understood that they are also keen to bolster their options in central defence this summer, with a season-long loan move for the 27-year-old being touted.
However, it is somewhat of a strange deal considering Mazzarri had the Portuguese international at Napoli for the second half of last season, and only used him sparingly.
Nevertheless, with doubts over the long term fitness of Christian Chivu and Walter Samuel, the Italian tactician feels it necessary to bring in reinforcements ahead of the new campaign as he looks to implement a three-man defence at San Siro.
Rolando’s agent has revealed that although there would be some hesitation in sealing a return to Italy considering his client’s lack of playing time under the former Napoli boss last season, it would be difficult to turn down a move to Inter.
“No, no phone call. Though they may have had contact with Porto. I do not think it is Mazzarri who decides to take him back since last year he played very little [just 7 appearances]. If he would accept? I think so. Who says no to Inter?” he is quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
It remains to be seen whether or not the stopper seals a return to Serie A this summer, but it is believed that it is just a matter of days before Wallace completes his loan move to San Siro.
The Brazilian starlet is expected to feature as a right wing-back for Mazzarri next season, as he will effectively be playing the same role as Christian Maggio from the coach’s time in Naples.
