It’s the second auction running that Yuvraj has fetched the top price, with Delhi not afraid to spend their bumper Rs 39.75 crore (£4.2m) purse – the highest in the IPL this year.
The 33-year-old started a four-way bidding war between Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals and the Daredevils, but in the end a fight between RCB and Delhi saw the latter come out victorious.
Other big money buys included Bangalore’s Rs 10.50 crore (£1.1m) purchase of Dinesh Karthik, whilst the Daredevils also splashed out on Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews for Rs 7.5 crore (£785,000).
Elsewhere New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult joined Sunrisers Hyderabad, Australian Aaron Finch went to Mumbai Indians and Delhi snapped up spinner Amit Mishra.
There were some surprises as unknown 20-year-old spinner K C Cariappa fetched Rs 2.4 crore (£251,000) as Kolkata Knight Riders took a gamble on the unproven youngster.
Sri Lanka veterans Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa Test captain Hashim Amla and New Zealand’s Ross Taylor were among the high profile names that went unsold.
Meanwhile ex-England cricketer Kevin Pietersen – who fetched a whopping Rs 9 crore (£941,000) last year – went to the Sunrisers for his base price of Rs 2 crore (£209,000), where he will link up with former international team-mate Eoin Morgan.
