Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher said he doesn’t understand why there are questions as to former Seminoles starting QB Jameis Winston’s character.
In an interview with WDAE 95.3 fm radio in Tampa Bay (the city that may draft Winston at the upcoming draft), Fisher expressed his frustration that teams would be shying away from his former star QB and 2014 Heisman Trophy winner over incidents that happened while he was in college.
“Why is there a question?” Fisher said. “Because of the character assassination that he’s lived through in the media, and the misinformation that has been printed and half-truths that have been printed. What amazes me about this whole process is the unprofessionalism of a lot of major newspapers, a lot of major outlets that did not report the whole truth of the situation and only slanted it for their own opinion. And when you go through that you have to answer those questions. Jameis has great character. Did he make mistakes? Yes. Did he make silly mistakes? Yes. I mean, he’s still a 20-year-old kid.”
Among the “silly mistakes” Winston made in college were shoplifting crab legs from a store, earning a one-game suspension from FSU for inappropriate behavior at the school’s student center but most notably a sexual assault allegation that he was not charged with.
Despite the complaints, Winston is still projected to go No. 1 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by ESPN NFL Draft expert Todd McShay.
Winston was named the starter at FSU as a freshman in 2013 and led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and a BCS National Championship win over the Auburn Tigers. For his incredible play in leading the NCAA’s top scoring offense, Winston won the 2014 Heisman Trophy. The following season Winston once again led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and a second consecutive ACC conference title, but the team ultimately lost in the Rose Bowl to the Oregon Ducks and 2015 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.
In five seasons as head coach at FSU, Fisher has a 58-11 regular season record and a 34-6 conference record. He has led the Seminoles to four ACC Atlantic division titles, three straight ACC Conference titles, four Bowl victories and the aforementioned National Championship win.
