One-Day thriller in Brisbane sends social media into meltdown.
Australian all-rounder James Faulkner became the toast of the Gabba as he led an amazing fightback to ensure his side secured one of the most thrilling wins against England ever.
Needing 25 runs off the final two overs with just Clint McKay as the final wicket batting with him, the Victorian belted the England attack to all parts of the ground, amazingly sealing victory with three balls left.
In the second last over, Faulkner attacked, hitting back-to-back sixes off Ben Stokes to bring the equation into the realms of possibility, before smartly getting a single to retain strike for the 49th over.
Still needing 12 off the final six balls, Tim Bresnan was asked to step up and secure what would have been a moral boosting win for the touring side.
Instead Faulkner showed why he can be one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world at the death, as he smashed three straight boundaries, sparking wild celebrations at the Gabba as Australia won by a single wicket to take a 2-0 series lead.
“It is unbelievable,” Faulkner said after the game.
“Look we are here to win so thanks to everyone who came out. Yeah it was looking that way at one point, but the middle order batted well exceptionally as we were able to pull off the victory.
“We only had one wicket left, and with Mitch’s (Johnson) experience he was trying to talk me through it. I knew I could do it deep down but it is always good to get it done on the day.
“Tried to hit it out of the park. Everyone was nervous and (Clint) McKay has a beautiful forward defence so everyone did their job.”
