Defensive end calls on third year QB to take charge of the Vikings locker room.
The Minnesota Vikings are in a period of transition from mediocre to becoming a genuine playoff contender, and it seems that long term leader Jared Allen is looking to pass that role onto third year Quarterback Christian Ponder.
Despite the Quarterback not yet developing into the elite passer the Vikings had hoped for, it is time for him to become the leader of the team, at least according to Allen.
Speaking on Jim Rome’s radio show, he is constantly pestering Ponder to step up.
“I tell him all the time, you have to be the guy. Adrian (Peterson) can carry this team so far, our defense can carry this team so far,” said Allen.
“You know, you look at teams that historically win championships and they have consistent play from the quarterback position.”
While Adrian Peterson is still the main man on offence, Ponder is in a position where he needs to elevate his game to a level that the Vikings can become a much more balanced offence.
The front office have gone out of their way to help him too, after they signed Greg Jennings via free agency, and gave up a lot of draft picks to select Corrdarelle Patterson in the draft.
The weapons are there now for Ponder to succeed, and must now prove to the team, fans and fellow players that he is the future of the franchise.
