The Daily Telegraph reports that the 27-year-old will confirm the deal in a press conference in Sydney at 2pm (AEDT), before jetting off to the USA to continue training.
Hayne impressed at the NFL Combine last week, clocking a time of 4.53 seconds in the 40-yard dash, making him quicker than a majority of elite American college players.
He will be placed on the Lions’ ‘futures list’ however and may face a long wait before making his NFL debut.
NFL teams use future’s contracts for players who they believe are not quite good enough to justify an active spot in the current list, but may be worth an active roster spot for the next season.
The Lions’ decision to sign Hayne comes just a week after the franchise axed running back Reggie Bush after he suffered a series of injuries in 2014.
