According to Bay Area News Group, Hayne has developed a cyst on the arch of his foot and will undergo surgery in Sydney next week.
Hayne quit the NRL last season to pursue a dream NFL career and was snapped up by the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year.
The 27-year-old is still a long way off an NFL debut however, as he must be selected in the 49ers 53-man roster for the 2015/16 season of which will be decided in September.
49ers coach Jim Tomsula said Hayne is showing major signs of improvement as the season draws closer.
“Now you’re starting to see his speed show up, as he’s attacking the line, running his tracks and feeling more comfortable,” Tomsula said.
Hayne admitted he is still coming to grips with having to change his running style due to his 6ft 2′ frame.
“bviously my running style is the biggest thing I have to change, being so high,” Hayne said.
“We watched some video of where I was to where I am now, it’s better but obviously a lot more I need to improve.”
