Argentine left feeling sore and sorry for himself despite moving through to the final.
What’s the strangest and possibly most embarrassing injury you’ve heard of on a football pitch?
Sit down, you’re wrong.
The answer is a torn anus which is what Javier Mascherano said he suffered as he made the last-ditch tackle on Dutch star Arjen Robben in their gripping World Cup semi-final win.
After the game Mascherano said to ESPN Brazil: “Não quero ser grosseiro … rasguei o ânus nessa jogada. Por isso a dor.”
When toughly translated it means: “I do not want to be rude … I tore the anus in that move. That’s why it hurt.”
Mascherano was lucky to be on the field at all for his heroic tackle, having suffered an apparent concussion from a head clash with Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in the first half.
Despite the apparent injury to the sensitive area, Mascherano should be right to play against Germany when the two superpowers of world football meet on Sunday for the greatest prize in the game.
