Reports in The Sun claim the Black Cats will give hitman Defoe a 3½-year contract worth £80,000 a week in the hope he can fire the goals that will secure Premier League safety.
The former England star could make his Sunderland debut on Saturday — at old club Tottenham.
The 32-year-old has been playing in the MLS with Toronto FC, but has endured a miserable time of it in the States, and has spoken openly about his desire to return to English football this month.
Poyet’s side are currently teetering above the Premier League drop zone, but with Jozy Altidore possibly moving to Canada in part exchange, Sunderland appear to have got their man. Aston Villa, Hull, Leicester and QPR were also interested.
