The Seattle Seahawks released a statement on Tuesday where it announced Williams’ condition.
Executive general manager John Schneider praised Williams’ toughness and said the Seahawks would support the 24-year-old throughout his battle with the disease.
“Jesse is an extraordinarily tough individual who has overcome a great deal in his life and we will support him in any way possible,” Scheider said in a Seahawks statement.
“He is in our thoughts and prayers.”
Williams said that whilst the news was “disappointing”, he believes he can overcome the latest setback and make a return to the NFL.
“Although disappointing, I am a fighter and will handle this,” Williams said.
“I am going to focus on my health and fighting this battle with a return to football as my ultimate goal. Thank you for your thoughts and support.
“Go Hawks!”
Williams joined the Seahawks in 2013, but has yet to play an NFL match due to his struggles with a number of injuries.
Originating from Thursday Island, Williams grew up playing rugby league and basketball and did not play American Football until his mid-teens.
