Arsenal and Manchester United suffered a big blow in their race for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho when the star’s manager revealed he’s staying in Portugal.
According to ESPN FC, Sporting Lisbon manager Jorge Jesus declared his confidence that the 23-year-old Portugese star would be staying in Premeira Liga despite intense interest from the Premier League powehouses.
“William is a certainty,” the first year manager Jesus said. “Sporting has young people who are already certainties, are not hopes or doubts. William will be enhanced if the team is also.
“Only players value the team respond to winning titles. He’s a player with features to play more. I have no doubt that with me will play more.”
Coming off a sensational year for Sporting that led to a Taca de Portugal win, as well as a great performance in the UEFA U-21 tournament in which he won Player of the Tournament honors, Carvalho’s stock has never been higher – and the same goes for his price.
Arsenal reportedly became the top Premier League contenders for Carvalho when it became apparent that Morgan Schneiderlin would be taking his talents to Old Trafford. In 2013, Arsenal reportedly offered Sporting Lisbon £13 million and Joel Campbell for the young star’s transfer, but Sporting turned it down.
