Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Barcelona coach discussed the strategy that his compatriot has adopted at Old Trafford, and believes that it doesn’t suit the club’s philosophy.
Cruyff believes it is the reason why the club struggles against the ‘smaller’ clubs in the Premier League, with Van Gaal’s style of play undoubtedly built on slow and methodical build-up play.
“He doesn’t dominate. I like dominating football. Manchester doesn’t play like that,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.
United were recently top of the league table, but their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday has seen them drop to third place in the standings with the Gunners and Manchester City surpassing them.
Of those three clubs, the Red Devils have scored the least amount of goals so far this season with 12, although Arsenal haven’t fared much better with 13.
Nevertheless, their goal-scoring troubles early on in the season would have undoubtedly been a source of great frustration for all concerned, and it remains to be seen whether or not they can bounce back from their disappointing outing at the Emirates last time out after the international break concludes.
