Manchester United have emerged as a candidate to sign Everton defender John Stones, who has been aggressively sought after by Chelsea.
According to ESPN FC, Man United are hoping to beat its Premier League rivals to the signing of the 21-year-old defender by offering defender Jonny Evans in a player-plus-cash deal.
Chelsea have already had their first three bids for Stones rejected, which eventually rose to £30m.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been frustrated with Chelsea’s pursuit of Stones, declaring that the England international is not for sale.
However, it is understood Everton will consider selling Stones if a bid of £34m is tabled.
Man United are hoping to take advantage of the Everton manager’s anger with Chelsea and will dangle Evans as bait.
The 27-year-old defender has spent his last nine seasons at Old Trafford, and could be a viable replacement for Stones if Everton are willing to sell.
The Red Devils have already signed Matteo Darmian, and they are expected to agree to a deal for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi.
United have been looking to rebuild its defence after a disappointing showing last season.
