Compound fracture did not register with the champion until after the fight
There might be a new reason why UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is nicknamed ‘Bones’.
Jones retained his title in convincing fashion as part of the main event at UFC 159 in New Jersey, but it was the gruesome injury he suffered that was one of the talking points after the dust had settled.
During the first round Jones broke his toe so badly that the bone pierced through the skin, leaving a trail of blood behind.
However, the 25-year-old continued on and finished his opponent Chael Sonnen via TKO before the bell for the end of the first round.
It was only after the adrenaline of the fight started to wear off did Jones realise he had done major damage to his foot.
During the post-fight interview Jones was forced to sit on a stool as medics attended his injury, with the champion then sent to hospital for the bone to be re-placed and stitches.
