The £32m summer arrival came off the bench on the 74th minute of the side’s Champions League clash with Schalke on Wednesday night after he was rested due to concerns over his fitness.
And the Portuguese manager revealed after the Schalke game that the Spanish striker is still recovering from a hamstring injury picked up during international duty and is still not fit enough to play three games a week.
“Everybody is ready to play. Diego is not in the best condition but he will start the game,” Mourinho said.
“He plays this game, he won’t play against Bolton, and he plays against Aston Villa. Let’s see his evolution.
“The medical department are doing their best, the player is fantastic in trying to play and being available for the team.
“We have to try to protect him until he gets completely fit.”
