The 34-year-old is due to join MLS outfit LA Galaxy over the summer, and Mourinho has expressed his sorrow at seeing the popular midfielder depart.
Asked if he would sign him the Portuguese tactician replied “Or get him on loan.”
Mourinho is believed to have come close to signing Gerrard for Chelsea back in 2005, only for him to stay at Anfield instead.
But speaking after the 1-1 draw in the Capital One Cup semi-final between the two sides on Tuesday night, Mourinho said: “I’m not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players.
“I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite [of the fact] he’s my opponent, I feel sorry that he’s leaving.”
