Speaking in his press conference after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City, as reported by ESPN FC, the Portuguese tactician described it as ‘mission impossible’ before joking that perhaps Hollywood actor Tom Cruise could help them out.
Nevertheless, he remains confident that his side will be able to finish in the top four and therefore secure their place in the Champions League next season, although they still face a tough test in achieving their objective.
The reigning Premier League champions are 12 points adrift of Manchester City and Arsenal who currently occupy third and fourth spot respectively on 26 points, and so Manuel Pellegrini and Arsene Wenger would have to oversee a significant dip in form in order to give Chelsea the opportunity to make up that ground.
Given both sides lost on the weekend and that there are still 25 games remaining in the season, it is more than within Chelsea’s capabilities to catch their rivals and put pressure on them in the second half of the campaign.
Their win over Norwich on Saturday will be seen as a crucial victory for their confidence, and ultimately it may well serve as a foundation for them to salvage their season as a top-four finish would potentially be seen as a success given their poor start.
However, it doesn’t get easier as Chelsea face Tottenham at White Hart Lane next weekend, while they have a trip to Maccabi Tel-Aviv to deal with beforehand.
Regardless, if the Blues are able to build some momentum, they will be confident of their chances of chasing down the pack and securing their spot in Europe’s premier competition next year.
