Bayern Munich’s Brazilian anchor-man could be heading to the Premier League…
Jose Mourinho is targeting Bayern Munich’s 25-year-old midfielder Luiz Gustavo, to replace the outgoing John Obi Mikel, according to talkSPORT.
The new Chelsea manager has always deployed at least one very defensive midfielder, who anchors the side from a deep position. At Chelsea during his first stint, Claude Makelele performed this role fantastically, while Esteban Cambiasso and Sami Khedira played in the position at Inter Milan and Real Madrid respectively.
Mourinho doesn’t rate Mikel, and the Nigerian could be heading to Turkish champions Galatasaray sooner rather than later.
A large bid would no doubt be needed for Bayern to consider selling the impressive Gustavo – who was an important part of Brazil’s Confederations Cup triumph.
The anchor-man lost a starting position at Bayern Munich last season to Javi Martinez, but still played a role in their treble-winning year. The midfielder has managed to cement himself a starting position in the Brazilian national side alongside Tottenham’s new signing Paulinho, so he will be keen to play regular first team football this season in the run up to the World Cup in his home country.
Bayern Munich have signed Thiago and Mario Gotze this transfer window, so competition for midfield places will be even stronger if Gustavo remains with the German champions.
Gustavo has said he wants to stay at Bayern Munich, but if Pepe Guardiola sees him as surplus to requirements among the wealth of talent at his disposal, the no-nonsense Brazilian could well be playing Premier League football next season.
