8) Ricardo Carvalho
The skilful Portuguese centre-half was one of Mourinho’s first signings when he joined in 2004, and he formed a brilliant partnership at the back with John Terry. Carvalho was solid defensively, but also had the ability to play the ball out from defence, which complemented Terry’s no-nonsense style perfectly. In Mourinho’s first year in charge, Chelsea conceded less goals in a league season than any side ever has, partly due to Carvalho’s calming influence.
