Former Barcelona junior coach to join A-League side.
Adelaide United on Tuesday announced that Spaniard Josep Gombau has agreed a two-year deal to coach the A-League club.
The 36-year-old coach of Hong Kong’s Kitchee, who previously worked with youth players at Barcelona, beat an impressive international field of applicants to win the head coach role at Adelaide starting in July.
Adelaide United said Gombau’s youth and experience were an exciting combination.
“He’s a young and ambitious coach and has agreed to take the next step into a bigger league and we’re confident he is the right person for the role,” said general manager of football operations Michael Petrillo.
“I want to enjoy this experience in the A-League because I think football in Australia is growing,” said Gombau, who has won two championships in a four-year stint at Kitchee.
The appointment ends a tumultuous period at the Reds, who struggled for most of last season under a caretaker coach after the shock resignation of John Kosmina.
