Chelsea’s 25-year-old Spanish playmaker Juan Mata missed training today, as Manchester United have made a £35m bid for his services, reports BBC Sport.
The playmaker has been unfavoured this season under Jose Mourinho, who has preferred Brazilian duo Oscar and Willian to line up in attacking midfield alongside Eden Hazard, and Mata now wants a move away from the club in time for next summer’s World Cup.
He’s only made 12 starts in the Premier League and Champions League combined, which seems unjust for a player of such considerable talent.
United lie 14 points off top spot, and fans have been crying out reinforcements this January. Signing Mata, who was regarded as one of the league’s finest players last term, would appease many Red Devils supporters who are quickly growing disillusioned with the sides performances and the lack of significant transfer activity.
If the Mata deal is completed this month, he would become United’s most expensive ever signing, breaking the £30.8m Dimitar Berbatov deal in 2008.
It’s unknown whether Chelsea will be prepared to sell the player to a league rival, although the club are apparently willing to part with the creator.
