The prosecution and defense have already made their opening statements, and the jury of 18 has been selected.
Although they are being sequestered, they have been granted permission by Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh to watch the Super Bowl; proving Hernandez’s name is not mentioned.
“You hear that word, you’ve got to walk out of the room. Distance yourself,” the judge said to NFL.com.
Hernandez had previously helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl in the 2011 season before losing to the New York Giants.
He was officially charged with murder in 2013 for killing Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee’s sister at the time.
It remains to be seen whether Hernandez is innocent or guilty, and whether he can return to playing football if found innocent.
