The South African born player has been in exile from the national team ever since being scapegoated for the 5-0 Ashes whitewash twelve months ago.
His explosive autobiography criticising several current players, and the appointment of old nemesis Peter Moores as head coach, added to the feeling that he had played his last game for the Three Lions.
However, the Graves asserted last week: “The first thing he has to do if he wants to get back is start playing county cricket. The selectors and coaches are not going to pick him if he’s not playing – I’ll leave it at that.” This seems to insinuate that the batsman still has a chance to return to the side.
The 34-year-old would probably have to lessen the amount he plays in the lucrative Indian Premier League in order to realise his dream, and it is unknown how willing he is to do this. He did say when asked on a comeback: “Let’s be clear – I’d love to play for England again.”
