Axed England star Kevin Pietersen says he has not yet given up hope of a return to international cricket and believes current one-day captain Eoin Morgan would welcome him into the side with open arms.
Pietersen was axed after England’s humiliating 5-0 Ashes loss in Australia last summer and went on to publish a tell-all book in which he was highly critical of England management and some of his former teammates.
“I was sacked, I don’t know why I’m not playing for England,” Pietersen told Ricky Ponting during Channel 10’s Big Bash League coverage on Tuesday.
“Never (have I been given a reason). They’re not allowed to; for legal reasons, they’re probably weren’t allowed to, and they still haven’t embellished on anything.
“I know that the current captain would love to have me in the England team.”
When asked if Morgan would welcome him back to the side, the 34-year-old did not back down from his claims.
“I think he probably would, yeah,” he is quoted as saying by AAP.
“I don’t see why not, I’m hitting it okay and I get along pretty well with most of the guys in there, if not all of them, so yeah, I don’t see why not.”
Pietersen has been in excellent form for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, leading many to call for his return to the national setup.
