Brazil star will still be fit for the new campaign though.
Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed that he suffered a broken nose while playing for Brazil against Mexico in the Confederations Cup on Wednesday night and will need surgery to correct the problem, reports the Daily Mail.
The Brazil international suffered the freak injury during the first half of the Selecao’s 2-0 win over their central American rivals when he attempted to clear a free kick, only to head against his captain Thiago Silva instead.
However, the good news for the central defender was that the victory guaranteed Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side a safe passage through to the semi-finals of the competition.
The 26-year-old, who has been capped 25 times by the five-time world champions since making his international debut three years ago, will still need corrective surgery to fix the problem, although it is expected that he will wait until the conclusion of the tournament to have the operation.
“Yes, my nose is broken, but that’s part of the game. Now I’ll have to wait until the end of the competition and undergo a surgery to fix it,” Luiz confirmed to Brazilian website Sambafoot after the full-time whistle.
