After a dominant performance in Australia, Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen is the early favourite to challenge Sebastien Vettel for the Drivers Championship this season.
The Finn eased to a comfortable win over second-placed Fernando Alonso, in a car that seemed to do anything Raikkonen wanted it to.
Whether it was controlling the tyres in the middle part of the race, or producing consistently fast laps early on, the car was at ease with its requirements and will give the Lotus team plenty of encouragement going forward.
The 33-year-old came in 22 seconds ahead of Vettel, who finished third. While it is still only one race in, the sheer dominance of his victory in Melboune will surely put Kimi top of challengers for the title, and so long as he can stay consistent, it is not an impossible feat.
With Malaysia the next race on Sunday, Red Bull will hope the faster conditions will help with the car setup, as they aim to get the reigning world champion back on the winner’s podium.
If Raikkonen can make it two out of two for wins for the season, then there will be little doubt left that he’s ready for a season-long battle with Vettel for the title.
