After RCB’S impressive showing yesterday these two title contenders need to keep up the chase.
It is a battle between two underachievers in the 2013 IPL, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians yet to really get their season going.
After Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chris Gayle crashed their way to a huge 130-run win on Tuesday, KKR and Mumbai are now eight and six points off the pace respectively.
This will be particularly worrying for Kolkata as the side are trying to defend their 2012 IPL title, but have lost four of their first six matches.
With a batting lineup that includes captain Gautam Gambhir, Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum this is a bit of a poor showing.
McCullum will have something to prove, especially as he saw his record of the highest ever Twenty20 score of 158 snatched away from him by a rampant Gayle, who smashed 175 runs off just 66 balls against Pune Warriors.
As for Mumbai, skipper Ricky Ponting has highlighted the shortcomings of himself and Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the order.
The side have fared only a little better than the Knight Riders, losing one less than their opponents and will also be looking to claim all the points today.
It is Tendulkar’s 40th birthday and the ‘Little Master’ will be wanting to be celebrating with victory after the match and not defeat, as the Indian inevitably comes towards the end of his career.
