LA Galaxy set to announce new DP on Thursday.
LA Galaxy are set to make an announcement on their third Designated Player, after coach Bruce Arena has said he wants to have current player Omar Gonzalez’s new contract tied up this week. Gonzalez would appear to be the most likely candidate for the DP role, although there has been speculation (some wildly optimistic) as to others such as Samuel Eto’o, Frank Lampard, Andrey Arshavin, Giovani dos Santos, and Anderson, according to MLSSoccer. The announcement will be streamed live on Thursday form the StubHub centre.

Gonzalez, 24, has been an excellent performer for LA Galaxy, helping the club to back-to-back MLS Cup titles, two Supporters’ Shields and three Western Conference crowns since 2009, and has been a regular starter under Jurgen Klinsmann in the US national team. There has been interest from abroad for Gonzalez, notably Stoke City in the Premier League, and the defender went out on loan to FC Nürnberg last year, but tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his first training session.
“I think at some point I do want to go to Europe, but I think it has to be the right time, and I’m still trying to figure that out …,” Gonzalez said on Wednesday. “Whether it be at the end of the year or whether it be later, three years from now, it doesn’t matter.”
Gonzalez said he enjoys playing in Los Angeles and would “love to stay here.”
“We’ve been talking back and forth, and, you know, the talks are continually going,” he said. “I think we’ve done some great things together here at the Galaxy, and right now my focus is on getting a third championship, a third consecutive championship, and that’s where my focus is.”
