The Ukrainian pentathlete exited the 1976 Montreal Olympics in disgrace, just four years after winning the silver medal in Munich four years earlier.

During the fencing component of the event, Onischenko used an illegal sword in which he had attached a switch to trigger the electronic scoring system whenever he pleased.

After fellow competitors complained, Onischenko was forced to change his weapon and was later disqualified.
