“I am grateful to CIRC for seeking the truth and allowing me to assist in that search. I am deeply sorry for many things I have done, Armstrong wrote in an official statement.
“However, it is my hope that revealing the truth will lead to a bright, dope-free future for the sport I love, and will allow all young riders emerging from small towns throughout the world in years to come to chase their dreams without having to face the lose-lose choices that so many of my friends, teammates and opponents faced. I hope that all riders who competed and doped can feel free to come forward and help the tonic of truth heal this great sport.”
A statement from Armstrong’s attorney, Elliot Peters, revealed the extent to which Armstrong co-operated with CIRC in their investigation, which included face-to-face meetings when they requested as well as providing documents that they had required access to.
Armstrong’s aim has been to uncover the truth in the sport, as he has argued that although he has faced the brunt of the anger and criticism since he was shamed for doping, it is a real issue across the sport in general with many young cyclists being pushed into the cover up.
Peters added that the CIRC investigation will help identify and reveal others that should in fact be sharing the blame and facing the same level of scrutiny as his client, and he thanked the Commission in their attempt to help uncover the whole truth rather than stand idle like many others.
