Lewis Hamilton took advantage of a mistake by Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to take a crucial victory in the Italian Grand Prix.
The British driver had to fight hard for the win despite starting from pole position. A temporary failure of his hybrid system dropped him to fourth early on, with Rosberg taking an early lead.
Hamilton quickly passed Kevin Magnussen and Felipe Massa, and had closed to within a second of his sister Mercedes when the German ran wide at the first chicane.
Victory for the 2008 World Champion takes him back to within 22 points of the championship lead, with six races remaining. The next venue on the 2014 race calender is Singapore in two weeks time.
The success will also be seen as a significant psychological boost to Hamilton and a corresponding blow to Rosberg. The German who was already under the spotlight after being criticised by his team for causing a collision between the two at the previous race in Belgium.
Massa and Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas finished third and fourth respectively, while the impressive Daniel Ricciardo drove his Red Bull to fifth place, ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel. The success for Williams, couple with the retirement of Fernando Alonso, saw them move back into third place in the Constructors Championship.
Force India’s Sergio Perez and the McLaren of Jenson Button finished seventh and eighth, while Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and the second McLaren of Magnussen completed the points, with the latter’s five-second penalty seeing him drop down from his initial seventh place finish.
