Liverpool initially had a bid of £5 million turned down but have now begun talks with the player’s representatives after seeing an improved offer of £8 million accepted.
Coutinho is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Europe, having already been capped by the Brazilian national side and starring for the Italian giants as a second striker or creative midfielder.
The player is adept with both feet, capable of mazy dribbles and has an eye for a killer through ball.
The signing goes some way in explaining why Liverpool did not make more of an effort to sign Coutinho’s former team-mate, Dutch star Wesley Sneijder.
Sneijder has agreed to join Galatasaray after the Anfield hierarchy deemed his wage demands to be too high and regardless, at just 20 years old, Coutinho allows the Liverpool management to maintain their focus on bringing in talented youngsters.
It remains to be seen at this stage whether Coutinho is seen as an alternative to Tom Ince, who has been linked with the Anfield club all month, or whether there is still a possibility of the Blackpool winger arriving at the club before the transfer window shuts.
