Liverpool transfer news
According to The Daily Mail, Benfica have valued the 27-year-old at £21m after impressing in his time in Portugal since making a £6m move from Boca Juniors in 2010.
Liverpool have been heavily linked to the Argentine international but face strong competition for his signature, with Premier League rivals Manchester United also believed to be interested.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to bolster his squad following a disappointing sixth-placed finish this term, and a player of Gaitan’s quality certainly fits the bill.
With Angel di Maria possibly on the way out of United, Gaitan could replace his countrymen for the second time after joining Benfica in the wake of di Maria’s departure to Real Madrid.
A Premier League move beckons for Gaitan, but it will be interesting to see which of the two clubs – if any – are willing to stump up the required transfer fee.
