Premier League giants keen on Brazilian defensive star.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle each other for the £24m signature of Real Madrid defender Marcelo this summer as they look to strengthen their respective back lines, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Premier League pair are already fighting out over who gets to sign Southampton midfield star Adam Lallana and are set to go up against each other once again for the talented Brazilian left-back.
The Reds have made two bids – both of which have been rejected – while Spurs are keeping close tabs on the situation.
Sources in Spain are suggesting that new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to give his newly inherited squad a makeover and has identified the Madrid star as the ideal man to slot in at left-back.
The 26-year-old is currently with the Brazil squad at the World Cup, and was in impressive form during Real’s Champions League campaign that saw him score in the final.
Reds chief Brendan Rodgers was forced to play Jon Flanagan out of position at left-back last year after losing faith in loanee Aly Cissokho.
And with the return of Champions League football to Anfield this summer Rodgers is keen to add some significant quality to his squad and now has to decide whether he wants to press ahead with a move for former Chelsea star Ashley Cole or go up against Tottenham for Marcelo’s signature.
