Porto winger Atsu looks set for a move to the Premier League.
FC Porto winger Christian Atsu looks almost certain to move to either Liverpool or Tottenham after declaring he will not be signing a new contract at the Portuguese club.
Spurs have shown interest in the Ghanaian for some time but it was the Reds who actually made the first move, offering £3m for the 21-year-old.
Atsu has a £10m buy-out clause in his contract but it’s thought that Porto will be willing to except a cut-price offer as the player only has a year remaining on his current deal.
“I spoke with the FC Porto directors before joining up with the national team and informed them that I will not be signing a new contract,” the Ghana international was quoted in the Mirror.
“My dream was always to play in England, and it is very nice to see my name associated with big clubs in the Premier League.
“For now, I’m focused on the international games but I see my future in England.”
Despite his African roots Atsu broke into the Porto first team via their youth system and played 24 times for the club in 2012/13 – including appearances in all eight of their Champions League matches.
The youngster spent a year on-loan at fellow Primeira Liga side Rio Ave the previous season, before flourishing under manager Vitor Pereira upon his return to the Estadio do Dragao.
Liverpool see Atsu as the perfect replacement for out-of-favour Stewart Downing, although it is unlikely their modest offer will put off Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas from matching it.
