Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi has been told by new boss Rafael Benitez that he does not have a place in the Spanish side’s squad this season, according to reports.
Illarramendi struggled to make an impact at the Bernabeu last season, and Daily Express reports the 25-year-old has become surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal have been linked with moves for the defensive midfielder, and the report suggests both clubs are now alert to the player’s availability.
Reports last Thursday suggested Illarramendi had turned down an opportunity to join Liverpool in order to fight for his spot at Real Madrid, but the latest developments could see him forced out of the club.
With Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Emre Can and Lucas Leiva all capable of playing in the holding midfield role, it remains to be seen if Brendan Rodgers is keen to add another midfielder to the mix.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are believed to be chasing Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets, while Francis Coquelin enjoyed a breakout season last term and is likely to again fill the defensive midfield role.
